Seasonal
Tips for Hot Months
Set
It, then Forget It
Set
your thermostat at 78 degrees or above for highest efficiency.
Whatever temperature setting you choose, be sure to leave your
thermostat at that setting.
When
possible, delay use of heat-generating appliances such as dryers,
dishwashers, vacuums, and other major appliances until evening
on hot days.
Evening
Breezes Only
Keep windows closed during the day. Sounds simple, but many people
forget to close their windows in the morning, letting hot air
into the house during the day. If you keep windows open at all,
be sure you have proper security to deter theft. An open window
is an open invitation.
Cool
the Cooler
Provide shade for your window or outside central AC unit. You
can increase the efficiency of your unit by as much as 10%, but
follow the manufacturer's guidelines to prevent blocking airflow.
Give
Your Windows Sunglasses
Installing effective shading and/or tinting to your windows can
create big savings. White window shades or blinds can effectively
reduce solar heat gain by as much as 50%.
Change
Your Filter, and Call COLT for Check-ups
Changing your AC unit's air filter each month will increase efficiency
and can prevent equipment failure. Based on our experience, we
highly recommend permanent electrostatic filters. Not only
are they more efficient (which will save you money), they are
designed to be washed monthly and reused (which will save you
money). Call COLT to get your permanent filter today! Be
sure to call COLT at 602-712-1244 for a preventative maintenance
checkup prior to the warmest months, then again before heating
season.
Your
Secret Weapon
Use
ceiling fans to circulate air when using higher thermostat settings
for a cool, comfortable environment and some cool cost savings
as well. Ceiling fans generally cost less than $30 at home improvement
stores and are generally far more efficient than using the air
conditioner. Ask your COLT representative about optimum ceiling
fan placement.
Optimize
Your Air Ducts and Vents
Consider closing vents in seldom used or unused rooms, and leave
the doors to these rooms closed. COLT can test for leaks and properly
seal and insulate air ducts, especially running through crawlspaces
and attics.
